I had tried many other fixes. I guess we are stuck opening the Excel application multiple times and opening the files individually within each window. You still have to then open the spreadsheet you want but its a simple solution.

Hi Gang, I know this is an older stream, but I have the exact same problem, but in PowerPoint. On Tue, 31 May 2011 13:27:19 +0000, Dunnk wrote: Prior to Windows 7. Your solution is show different windows in the taskbar???

Excel 2016 - Additional Spreadsheet Opening By Default

Strange one I can't seem to figure out and tye down. We have a user that has been having problems with Excel spreadsheets particularly but sometimes Word. No idea what this could be. Tried: I have made sure they don't click twice... I have even done it myself and it happened. Saved a copy of the file as Excel Workbook. Could it be a profile thing? Or more likely bad file? Extra Info: Windows 7 Professional Microsoft Office 2007 Original Excel 1997-2003 Workbook but same happens with. I just right click and open. Unfortunately, today, even that has stopped being a solution. I've been struggling with this for the past 8 months since my company switched from Apache OpenOffice to Microsoft Office. We run Windows 7 and Office 2007, but.... Opened two instances when I clicked to open one.... Hi, I have this happening but only on some files. Most recent one is one where I merged the worksheet into another workbook. Since then whenever I open the new master file, I get two instances of the file open. I do not have the preview pane active. I get the two instances when I double-click on the file. Cheers, h2 Preview pane appeared to be my issue as well. Curious I wasn't able to find the solution to this anywhere but this thread when searching around. Seems like this would be something more commonly complained about and a definitive cause identified since turning off the preview is more a workaround than a true fix. Just thought I would chime in here I found the answer for this issue at least in my case. I was upgrading about 10 computers from 2010 to 2013 and this happened on several of the computers. I found the answer buried somewhere on a Microsoft support thread. On one computer I had to do it three times but it eventually took. It was finally nailed down to the use of the 'Preview Pane' in Windows explorer. Anyone else see this as a common trait? If the preview pane is a must, you can right click and 'open' the document and not get the issue. Win 7 Pro 64 bit, Office 2007 didnt matter what SP Just had that very problem and solution here. Seems to also be tired down to the fact that the Excel file was password protected. Win 7 SP1 x64, IE11, Office 2013 ProPlus Office 365 E3 plan Thank you! Now why is it asking me that? Maybe I've got a virus because it's acting awful strange! II am using Windows 7. I have just transfered all my files to another PC. Evrytime i open a folder in Excel,a folder wih a similar name opens in Word too. I deleted the old. Excel 2013 on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit Darfoulde wrote: By a complete fluke I went into explorer and right clicked Documents under Libraries and selected properties then I selected Restore Defaults. I do not get that annoying extra blank app any more. David I just had this start happening to me today, in Excel 2013. Found this post, and your solution fixed it! If the preview pane is a must, you can right click and 'open' the document and not get the issue. I ran into the same problem on Win7 with Office2013x64. We removed the x32 version and installed the x64 and I had the extra-empty instance of Excel running. It wasn't the Preview Pane for me since I only ever use Details. It was, however, my pinned Excel shortcut. If I right click the Excel icon and select the file, the xlsb sheet opens; instead if I right click that same file and select open, then just the workbook I want opens. I can do it with documents I just created as well as document that were created in Office 2000 and older. I'm guessing this is a glitch that Microsoft either wont admit to or wont fix Solutions: 1 turn off preview pane or 2 allow the preview pane to show the document before you open it.

Then either on your desktop or start menu open a blank Excel document using your Excel Icon. I graduated from Emory University in Atlanta, GA in 2002 with a degree in Computer Science and Mathematics. If the preview pane is a must, you can right click and 'open' the document and not get the issue. Once opened, Joan reports that she has two workbooks showing in the task bar. Its annoying when a program does something that is unusual and we as consumers have to go searching the internet to try to fix a problem with their software. So, I'm trying as a reply to your original.
